YouTube testing live streaming

YouTube is finally testing live streaming at various times today and tomorrow. You can check out the schedule on its blog.

Don’t for a minute think that this will turn YouTube into Justin.tv, where anyone can just switch on a webcam and broadcast anything to the world. YouTube is working with ‘partners‘ on this, bringing you essentially live streaming TV. To me that sounds like, well, TV.

One of the greatest things about the internet is being able to watch what you want, whenever you want, so I’m not sure what a non-archived live stream will really add to the story. However, previous live events have proved popular on YouTube, and ‘live’ is a much better environment for advertising.

If the tests are successful, it’s not clear how far YouTube will roll out live streaming. They say

all broadcasters need is a webcam or external USB/FireWire camera.

It’s interesting that they use the word broadcaster, not user. Trials start at 8:00 AM PST.
