How to create free customized ringtones for the iPhone
As you may already know, iTunes not only sells songs but also ringtones you can use in your iPhone if you pay the correspondent tax, which is $1 apart from the $1 for each song. However, some of us still think that’s too much for a simple ringtone. So if you prefer to save those two bucks for something else, keep on reading and learn how to create free customized ringtones for the iPhone.
First you’ll need to download ToneShop: this program enables you to select the best fragment from your favorite song and convert it to several mobile phone audio formats – including iPhone. Use ToneShop to create the ringtone, select the iPhone profile and save the resulting M4R file in any folder on your hard drive.

Now double click the M4R file and it’ll launch iTunes, creating the Ringtones area in your library right away if this is the first time you work with M4R files in iTunes. If not, the new ringtone will simply be added to your collection.

To transfer the ringtone to the iPhone, simply go to the Ringtones tab inside the iPhone area in iTunes and sync your iPhone. Your brand new personalized ringtones will be available in Settings > Sounds > Ringtone, under the Custom section.

Very nice blog, but your ToneShop: link is not working. What’s that?

Hi Pratish,
ToneShop is a tool that lets you create customized ringtones for your mobile phone. It seems the program’s homepage is not working, but you can still check it out at Softonic: http://toneshop.en.softonic.com/

I can creat and see the customized ringtone in the Libriary under ringtone. However, when I try to sync the ringtone, the customized ringtone doesn’t show on the “selected ringtones” box. What should I do?

Hi Horace! I’m not sure what you could do. Sometimes I have problems when syncing photos between the PC and the iPhone and in the end I usually make it work by restarting iTunes, moving photos to another folder in the PC or even by deleting the whole Photo library in the iPhone and resyncing it all again from scratch. Maybe these tricks work for you too when syncing ringtones. I’m sorry I can’t help you further.

@ Horace,
I had the same problem. It may have to do with the length of the ringtone. There must be some limit to how long the clip can be. Try making the clip smaller. I’m still fiddling with it. But 50 sec is too long and 20 sec worked… so play with the limits.

@ Ketan and Horace,
if your problem is due to clip length, maybe you’d like to know that the iPhone’s limit for ringtones is 30 seconds
Hope this helps!
